GPU와 그래픽카드의 차이

해외 포럼에 올린 블렌더 관련 질문에 달린 코멘트에 'graphics card'라는 단어를 그대로 사용했는데 '니가 말하는게 GPU 카드라면... '이라는 답이 돌아왔다.

?? 그래픽카드랑 GPU랑 똑같은 말 아닌가??싶어서 검색해봤는데 다른 단어였다....GPU라는 단어에 이미 unit이라는 말이 있는데 아무래도 영미권 나라가 아니다보니 한국에서는 거의 동일시해서 사용해 온 것 같다.

GPU(Graphics Processing Unit, 그래픽 처리 장치)

- 그래픽카드의 부품 중 하나. Graphics Processing Unit이라는 이름에도 알 수 있듯이 그래픽 처리를 맡는 부품이다.

NVIDIA, AMD 등의 회사는 전체 그래픽카드가 아닌 GPU만을 만들며, 다른 회사들이 이 GPU를 가지고 그래픽카드로 만드는 것.(혹은 CPU안에 넣거나.)

 

- 한국에서는 GPU를 그래픽카드와 동일시해서 사용하고 있다. 흔히 한국에서 '내장 그래픽카드'라고 일컫는 것은, CPU안에 들어간 GPU이다. 내장 그래픽카드가 아니라 'CPU내장그래픽' 혹은 'CPU 내장GPU'라고 말하는 것이 맞다.

'외장 그래픽카드'라고 일컫는 것 또한, 원래는 그냥 '그래픽카드'다.

 

- 해외에서는 'CPU 내장 GPU'와 'CPU 외장 GPU'를

• iGPU(integrated GPU, 통합GPU)
• dGPU(discrete GPU, 별개GPU)

라는 단어로 구분해서 말한다.

 

*eGPU(external GPU, 외부GPU)라는 단어도 있는데, 데스크탑용 그래픽카드를 노트북에 연결하여 사용할때 일컫는 말이다.

GPU명은 작업관리자 혹은 장치관리자에서 쉽게 찾을 수 있지만, 그래픽카드 제조사와 모델명은 찾기 조금 복잡하다. 찾는 방법은 아래 참조.

Find the Manufacturer and Model Number

If, for some reason, you need to know exactly what model video card you have, you'll have to do a bit more work.

The manufacturer is easy enough to find with a third-party app called Speccy. Download the free version, start it up, and click the Graphics option in the sidebar. Scroll down and look for the Subvendor entry, which should tell you who made the actual card in your PC—in my case, Asus made this particular RX 580. (You'll also be able to see how much video RAM your card has, among other specs.)

 

Unfortunately, this won't tell you the exact model number, which you'll need for, say, warranty claims. (Asus makes a few different RX 580 cards, and they'll need the exact model number to provide support.) For that, you'll need to either search your email for the receipt (if you bought the card online) or open your PC up.
